Hello Gidjit, I worked in Northwestern Ontario (Wawa, Red Lake) and there are plenty of mines in that neck of the woods. Lake Superior. Timmins, Cobalt, Kirkland Lake, Rouyn Noranda. I see some panning in Eastern Ontario on Youtube although exact locations are not well known. Best is to visit Ministry of Natural Resources and speak to a geologist. They can educate you on the rules and regs and possible local sites. Search Google for old mines.

Very nice gold ! Gold paning in north America is special because during the last glaciation, the extremely rich gold pre glacial placer was dispersed very wildly. Because of that, searching for the primary source of the gold (like a gold bearing vein ) is sometimes extremely hard. if you are new in this wonderfull hobby, I strongly recommend you to go to a well known alluvial auriferous( Gilbert river and mining creek for exemple ) to learn on the field how to find the precious metal. After that, it will be a lot more easier to find your spot. ( I use a lot the geochemistry data to find a possible spot and the mineralisation in somme key element like the copper ) I'm sure you can find somme very nice nugget/gold specimen in Ontario. For exemple : http://www.constantinemetals.com/projects/croesus/Good luck !

Sapphires are nice, I saw a thing where a guy lived in a cave as his house in Australia and he chipped opals off some of the walls to go shopping. Maybe Coober Pedy. Got out last weekend for a bit.
