To kill some time, here's another shabby California fractional dollar, 1855 BG533, from the mint of jewelers Nouizillet and Routheir.

I had this on a keyring as a fob for a little while, but the rim started to stretch out. The octagon shape has worked to loosen screws a couple times, and better than a Half Dime for that. It's a versatile little coin.

Although the below, 1854 "Philly" half dollar is neither a San Francisco or Carson City mint issue, it definitely circulated in Sacramento, California in 1855 or not long after; this, as evidenced by its drug store counterstamp ...

James Lozier Polhemus was born in 1825 in NY City, per Brunk. Polhemus sailed on the Orpheus to California in 1849 and established his pharmacy in 1850; remaining at the J Street address until his death in 1866. An 1859 directory lists him as a wholesale and retail druggist. His wife continued the business until 1874. One of his counterstamped $20 gold pieces, recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America, sold for $48,000 in 2001. Brunk wrote that Polhemus was open for business at all hours, selling at cost to indigents, stamping all coins that passed through his till.

Dr. Brunk reported about eighty specimens known in 2003; this, in his work, Merchant an Privately Countermarked Coins. Brunk's listing includes a wide variety of silver and gold coins, foreign and domestic. The Polhemus logo counterstamps are today highly prized by collectors, what with their mortar and pestle pictorial.

Very cool exo. I bet that coin might have seen the Central Pacific being built. I wonder if his wife took up stamping all coins with his mark after his death?

@ Cascade ... It's what I find most fascinating about the counterstamped coins, today telling us of their travels.

It's doubtful that Mrs. Polhemus carried on with her husband's habit as such. As the latest stamped Polhemus coin is dated 1857, his issues most likely predate his demise by almost ten years. Then too, the Civil War money shortage put a major damper on the practice of counterstamping.

My earliest SF mint coin; low grade, but problem-free.

Oh yeah! A half eagle....somewhere between VF30 and XF40 I'd say.

Saw Mick Fleetwood last night @paleoguy. Still listening to recordings of Oh Well covers over the years to compare. It was like Peter Green invented Led Zeppelin with that song. Albatross is pretty tame and dated sounding in comparison, though they crushed Black Magic Woman.
