Now let me see? If some "Coin Collector" (and I've been to many) offered me 1995W Liberty Silver Dollar that they claim is a PF70 UC in a so called air tight for $50K+. I'm siding with a NGC or PCGS, whereby I'm assured I'll have an inert gas back filled hermetically seal specimen.

The pictures are poor so the seller likely shot themselves in the foot. The price is well under current retail so if it has good in-hand eye appeal it should be worth $100 more.

I'm siding with a NGC or PCGS, whereby I'm assured I'll have an inert gas back filled hermetically seal specimen. there is a lot of difference between a classic coin and a modern coin..the difference between mint state 60, 62, 63, 65, 66 etc on Morgan dollars and other earlier coins is noticeable to the trained eye where as the difference between a proof 69 and 70 is almost non existent and the chances of resubmitting a PF-70 eagle and having it come back the same are less likely than resubmitting an MS-66 morgan and having it come back the same. the difference between PF-70 and 69 are basically nothing while the difference between an MS-64 and 65 or MS-66 and 67 is noticeable. Let's face it: the coin sold for what is was worth, well under catalog value with good reason. This is an eye-candy piece that would never make 66 if bright.

I don't understand spending big money on common Morgans. I would rather have an 1894 in AU than a common Morgan in MS66. I know this is a big split in opinion among collectors. I want the scarce Morgans now since I have all the rest. I may never get all the Morgans in the condition I want, but I will chip away and then I move on to either cherry picking or buying gold coins.

I want to see better photos of this coin. Are you going to take some when you get it? If I'm going to buy an MS66 Morgan it will have to be in a PCGS slab WITH a TrueView photo. It's not that I don't trust NGC. I just really want that TrueView image to determine the actual condition of the coin where hits, nicks, dings, and scratches are concerned. Always remember that ALL TPGs over grade and under grade coins from time to time. Good photograhy is a MUST for ebay sales. I'm betting the seller of your coin could have done better if the photos had been taken in better lighting conditions at least. Three NGC graders have seen this coin in hand, so I trust their grade. . . . . until I have reason to not trust it.  Edited by Darth Morgan

I have seen many NGC MS66 Morgan coins selling for very low prices and it seems fishy to me. How easy is it to fake a NGC coin? The coins I have seen with seemingly MS66 ratings are always the most common Morgans. These coins sell on ebay for less than for MS65 listed in 2017 US Coin Digest. I am not attacking NGC, but something seems wrong and I wonder if the slabs are being misused or faked. I, personally, cannot tell the difference between a MS65 and a MS66 Morgan. I depend on PCGS or NGC to grade correctly is I am going to buy online and I do buy online because that is the only place I can get certain coins I want. Have any other posters here seen MS66 Morgans graded by NGC that just don't make sense from price standpoint the seller is asking? I have seen many. |
