Here's a lowered (& provisional) banknote from Malta.

The government took a 1918 2 Shillings (P-9) & lowered it to function as a 1/- due a severe coin shortage during World War 2. They overprinted the 2 shilling remainders in 1940 & issued the new fractional in 1942 (newly designated as P-15):
