I now fear the current situation might resolve itself in a violent convulsion instead.

-Your fears materialized this past Saturday with an alleged assassination attempt on Maduro.

[-however, with such an unstable government, it is unclear whether the drone "attack" really was an assassination attempt or whether it was just a set up staged by Maduro to root out his enemies]

I was aware of that drone "attack" - you're right to wonder if it wasn't theater, calculated to possibly also somehow rally the masses and externalize the causes of their misery. Were Maduro assassinated, I'm hard pressed to see how even that would right the foundering ship of state or avert an eventual bloody clash between the military/police apparatus and the populace. There'a a privileged cadre running that government that would remain ideologically committed to the socialist experiment (which did previously survive Chavez's death after all).

The poster child of Socialism as a form of societal structure, seems to be working quite well here all that 'free stuff" as promised to the masses. Chickens have come home to roost unfortunately. Coming to a country near you.

That country was so nice and beautiful, Caracas was cosmopolitan... this was the 1960's when my aunt and uncle were there. He was posted by his US company. Great memories.

Maduro has a plan to fix Venezuela's inflation — which may make things worse
https://www.washingtonpost.com/worl...3448ad276e72

Quote:
Maduro late Friday outlined a dramatic effort to curb inflation that has been spiralling toward 1 million percent, raising the minimum wage by more than 3,000 percent and officially devaluing the already nearly worthless bolívar by more than 90 percent. He additionally said in a televised address that the currency, which was already scheduled to shed five zeros Monday, would now be backed by Venezuela's petro, a virtual currency linked to oil reserves that the government created in February and that experts have called a sham.

But analysts said the plan failed to address the fundamental problems causing inflation - the willy-nilly minting of bolívares, collapsing oil output and a complete lack of confidence in the government.

So Venezuela did issue the new Bolivar Soberano on Monday as mentioned above. Anyone got them yet? It sounds like they are extremely difficult to get a hold of but I do see a couple on ebay. Given the difficulty that the people that need them are having getting them, I'll probably hold off for a while.

Some of the stuff Maduro is quoted as saying is just the most ridiculous mumbo jumbo....

Earlier today, the International Monetary Fund issued a forecast of an inflation rate for Venezuela in 2019 of 10 million percent.

That's terrifying. It's entirely possible that we'll be seeing notes with comical denominations from Venezuela soon as we saw from Yugoslavia and Zimbabwe.

Well, remember that the government by fiat just simply lopped off five zeroes in August, and could easily do so again, a policy that works against the future issuance of such "super" denominations. In any event, everybody should understand that the new Bolivar Soberano is no more stable than the 100,000 old Bolivars it replaced, and that the people of Venezuela look to be in for even more misery.

A 10 note for £0.99

Those are, of course, being numismatically valued. As of yeaterday, the British pound officially would exchange for over 321,000 Venezuelan bolivars. And even that rate, which appears to have been very stable for the past few months, is artificially propped up by the Maduro regime - on the black market, £1 will buy even more bolivars, with the figure increasing daily.

Well, it's actually even crazier than that if you take into consideration that the present 321 thousand quote is for the "new" bolivar that was created by the expedient of simply eliminating 5 zeroes last year - otherwise, that number would now be over 32 billion per £1....
