Many different opinions on this one!
It is pretty rough, assuming that it is a genuine 1909-S VDB, $400 sounds like a fair price.

Even if the guy backs out and only offers $200, I would still take the money and run . The eye appeal of this Lincoln is excruciating !  |

Die #4 has the MM shifted way further to the right than here, imho. Either way, grab any money and run for sure.  |

I think $400 is MORE that fair for this Lincoln.
It's beat up pretty badly.
I would not offer that much...maybe $300 tops.

So I met with a local coin dealer today to take a look at this coin specifically and to buy some of my random silver pieces. He suggested that I send this s-vdb into anecs to get certified. His feeling is that even damaged as it is (has a warp you notice if you lay it down on a flat surface) if I were to get it certified then it would fetch a higher price be it a private sale or ebay. Any thoughts? |

ANACS isn't going to really increase the value of that coin. Me personally I would offer you the same raw as I would for an ANACS slab. You also risk the coin coming back from ANACS in a details slab which would further lower the value. If you have an offer of $400, take the money and run. I would offer $100-$150 for the coin the way it sits.

I think you already received the advice that several members here have offered you. What would be the point of getting it slabbed when it is not problem free and you already have a buyer willing to pay (well) for it in raw form?

The mintmark is definitely in die position 4. Is there a way you can get a closer image of just the mint mark?

The pictures are hard to use, but it looks like it's got a rim cut above "R" in "TRUST" on the obverse. If that's true, $400 is more than fair for a raw 1909-S-VDB cent with problems. Like Woody Allen said, "Take the money and run."
