I like the way you are thinking about you Carson City Morgans. To me the 79CC, 89CC and 93CC are the coins where you may have to settle for XF. The others are affordable in AU and even some in MS condition. There are a bunch of other Morgans especially 92-S through the 96-S that are expensive in any grade of MS. The 84-S, 86-O, 1904-S, 1903-S and the 1901 all take big jumps in price between XF45 and MS60. It is a real challenge to have a complete set of Morgans with your lowest condition coin a AU50. One coin that is overlooked for some reason is the 1894 with mintage of just 110,000. If the 1894 is not a sleeper I don't know what is? There are many other Morgans that cost much more in higher grades than the 1894.

Thanks Terry8835. I have tried to put a lot of thought into it so I have a really nice set when I'm done. The idea being to buy the final coin and not play the upgrade game. Finish it and put it away is my goal.

I am still hoping to be able to do the set in XF40/XF45 so I am going to see how some of this plays out and if I can get lucky on the 1880's dates in XF40/45. Even though I don't want to, I might have to buy a couple of hedge my bet coins in XF40 and AU53 in the 1880's years until the 1885 plays out. If I get the 1885 in AU then I will be fine going XF45-AU55. I could even go XF40 to AU53. I'm not sure how I feel about the XF40 to AU55 spread. I am trying to keep the spread small so the set looks consistent.

I worry about the AU grade already when some of those coins look like they saw very little circulation. I was really going for the circulated set look because of the history.

And this is what OCD, coin collecting, and I have to finish my plan type of mentality gets you. The insanity!

It looks like the word is out on this coin as several of the bidders have cancelled their bids. It is now back to the opening price.

That coin looks like VF 35 Dets, possibly counterfeit.

Defenate fake. I don't know if Bobby can stop it in an hour this time of night. Maybe If we all message the seller with a link to this thread he'll do the right thing being a big player. I'm sure he doesn't know. It's a good fake

A GSA uncirculated one is only $150 more than that coin.

For comparison, the first one is graded by PCGS, the second is the coin in question

With less than 10 min to go all the bids have been cancelled. Looks like either the word got out that the coin was bad or the Seller had a change of heart about the coin.
Rest in Peace

The seller was unaware the coin was fake until receiving a few e-mails and agreed upon further inspection. The listing could not be killed by the seller so he elected to cancel all the bids.

I'm not sure why this thread caught my attention as I don't collect Morgans and my limited skills are focused in other classic coins.

I'm just so impressed with my colleagues on CCF collaborating and sharing their expertise. This is the best family ever and I'm so proud to be a small part of it.

OK, let's move on.
