Thanks for sharing Bill. If you could go back to your early collecting years, would you assemble this collection again or buy the highest grade 1794 silver dollar you could find? Were 1794s more reasonable in the 60s and 70s?

The 1794 dollar has almost always been out of my reach since I became a collector. Part of the reason is that I almost never buy problem coins. The other part is that it's always been expensive. Back in the early '80s when I was going to the Bay State Coin Shows that were in Boston at that time. A dealer always had a date run of early Dollars for sale. Among them was a 1794, but it had a problem. Price was still about $35,000. If I didn't buy another coin, there was no way that I could have saved $35,000 on my salary. In the mean time I would have missed out on a lot of great coins like a 1792 Half Disme, a Chain Cent and a 1796 Quarter. To me those coins are just as important historically as a 1794 dollar. The last shot I could have has a few years ago when Harry Laibstain had one in a VF holder for something like $80,000. The piece was straight graded, but it was weakly struck, and the legend on the reverse was partially weak. I was looking to finish my early gold type set at the time, and it wasn't up on his site for long any way.

I love the Gobrecht dollar. The AU-58 Bust dollars look amazing as well. I used to go to the Bay State Coin shows in the 80's. They gave us locals free tables on Sunday when lots of the dealers left and we could setup.
