Good afternoon. So I'm reading my new copy of 'Guide for Grading Coins of Canada' that I ordered recently. As I only collect silver dollars right now, a lot of the guide is not specifically applicable to my interests. But there is definitely some useful content for about any collector of Canadian coinage. The end of the book has a 'General Grading Guide' that contains these big blow up pictures of the various AU grades and the uncirculated grades ranging from MS-60 to MS-67. I find them really helpful. Also, there is a page that describes and shows examples of four 'Types' of MS (business strike) luster. Here is where I have questions...
Does Type 1 luster correspond to the typical 'brilliant uncirculated' flashy luster (similar to that of many Morgan silver dollars)? Would Type 2 also be described as a 'satin' luster? Type 3 sounds similar to the proof like and Deep Mirror Proof Like (DMPL) luster of (U.S.) Morgan dollars. I'm not clear on what Type 4 looks like. Maybe I am getting confused, because Canadian luster types don't have corresponding analogues with American coinage? Would I be well-served to ask someone like my Canadian-based dealer to put together and sell me a reference set containing the four Types of Canadian coin luster? I am guessing that I need to see examples of each luster in hand in order to understand what each looks like? Thanks for explaining.
