Another U.S. Central. I would like the part of DST done away with where we spring forward. Falling back is just fine with me.

Quote: The main hangup will probably be that the bill also moves the entire state into the Central timezone. At the moment the SW corner of the state is in Mountain, and apparently they like it that way. If it passes it will probably be like how it was here in Indiana when we didn't observe DST. Areas close to the border or large cities will probably have local option and will stay with the time of their major market. Here north west Indiana stayed on Central DST to stay in step with Chicago, while the south central part of the state stayed on Eastern DST to stay with the Louisville market. Some border towns kept the same time as the cities on the other side of the border, some didn't. One city near here had the border run right through the middle of the city. The eastern side observed Eastern DST while the western side observed Eastern no DST. So for half the year they would all be on the same time and the other half one side of town would be an hour ahead of the other. I liked it better back before we started observing DST here. (They only have to put it up for a vote twenty times, once each year, before they finally got DST passed. Next thing to get passed will be allowing Sunday alcohol sales. That's been voted down about 15 times now. They'll get it eventually.)

Quote: Why not ask Bobby to collect ISP data?
That could give you member distribution, posts distribution, etc.
I'm sure he's just sitting there, waiting to help. We do collect ISP date, but Bobby has a lot to do right now. Personally, I wish we would go on DST and stay there. It seemed like we were heading that way every time they shifted the start date up and the end date back. Right now the US is only on Standard Time for 19 weeks, while we are on Daylight Time for 33.

On the shortest day, sunrise wouldn't be until 9:20am if we were on DST all the time. 8:20 is bad enough, another hour later would be worse. One reason always given for not going full DST is that children would be going to school in the dark during the dead of winter. So it is cited as a safety concern.

Yes, you are correct. I should have expanded on my thought a bit more. If we ever abolished DST, we would certainly need to look at revising our current timezone boundaries.

I'm in Moscow. 55 (and change) degrees north, plus decree time (basically full DST introduced by Lenin in 1918). On the shortest day in 2016, sunrise wasn't until 9:00am. The year before, it wasn't until 10:00, because we were under yet another set of full DST (on top of Lenin's version). It's worse in Saint-Petersburg, 400 miles northwest of me... sunrise a bit over 10am shortest day of this winter, something like 11am shortest day of last winter. OTOH, on the longest day of last summer, the sun rose at 4:35am, and set at 11:25pm... yeah. It's not called "white nights" for nothing.

Ok, I added "Other" as a choice to fill the last possible answer blank. I left it off originally because I didn't figure it would tell anyone much and you guys would comment anyway. But now I see the value of adding it to the graph as a comparison. Thanks for the suggestion and everyone's responses! @Oldephriam - If I had thought of that I definitely would have included the choice!

I'm on Pacific time. I wouldn't mind if they kept the clocks ahead during the winter, as I could do without 4:15 PM sunsets in December. I suppose the safety reason makes sense, but then again I drive to school in the dark most of the year anyway.

I think DST is one of the stupidest concepts ever thought of... With a 24/7 society, DST is not needed anymore... Quote: I liked it better back before we started observing DST here. Also, I think the fact that we cannot buy alcohol on Sunday is old, absurd, and outdated and the it goes to show how much influence the liquor store association have on our General Assembly...

I am another eastern time zone member and I hate the fall back also.
Altho I do understand why it is necessary with the current boundaries.

Well, so far exactly half of the responses are for US/CA Eastern.
Can't say I didn't see that coming...

My mother used to live in Maine, and when I would visit her for Christmas, the days were remarkably short (particularly for a college kid who liked to sleep in). Being so far east in the Eastern time zone, on a cloudy day (which is most of them in ME in the winter) it gets dark at 3:30 PM local. And then everything shuts down for the night as people go sit by their fireplaces.

Two surprises so far:
The lack of Pacific votes and US/CA Central being in a strong second.
I'm still holding out for at least one NFLD, Alaska or Hawaii...
