Database.
ID number on the front of the slab, unique to that particular coin.
PIN on the back of the slab, covered with a small opaque flap so that it will not be inadvertently exposed. Second choice would be a hologram that does not show up on a direct scan.

A prospective buyer can look up the coin on the TPG's website with the serial number alone. This will display the current owner's information (as much as they choose to list). It will also display an update history, with transaction dates only, no owner information.

With both the serial and the PIN, the current owner information can be changed.

If the PIN becomes compromised, the owner can return the coin to the grading service for a corrected PIN, for a reduced fee.

There is one new TPG, out about two months that t6akes high res images of almost every coin they get and put them online so that with just a serial number off the slab, visible even on online auctions, or by going through their "visual population report" anyone can see the pictures of the front and back of the coin and also a picture of the front and back of the whole slab. The company is DGS or Dominion Grading Service, and I am not telling you to trust them, they are new, but they have an interesting idea!

Now we just to see if it works...
