The difference? If it were a doubled struck coin, the reverse would look that way also. But evidently this is not the case because the reverse is normal. Thus a doubled die. Why hasn't this die been found before? Maybe it is just one of a few. Maybe the dies were pulled from use after it was detected by the operator. Like the 1958 DDO there are only two known. When looking at this example, the die is in a very fresh die state. So there maybe just a few examples out there. First I've heard about it.

I see, Coop. It's still a very impressive DDO, and I'll have to recheck my 1941s!

Awesome find. Every time I read this forum, I need to go through my coins again. Too much fun.

I will try to get a picture of the front and back of the coin today and post. I would guess the condition would be VG, I will post and let the pros decide. I have no idea about the value. Since I had never seen this example posted I figured it was probably pretty rare.

You might consider taking the coin to a professional photographer and having some images made. And putting one up on your wall, as that is truly one incredible doubled die.

These must be rare. I would think the doubling would be hard to miss even if someone didn't know about the variety.

Take lots of pictures before you send it off, it's harder to photograph once encapsulated. Hold it only by it's edges. Do not clean it, that would lower it's value. It is extremely valuable. I'm sure you knew at least some of that stuff, but had to mention it.

Here is an overlay where the doubling would be seen on these devices.

Could this be the new 1969-S or 1955 DDO that is about to become super valuable?

This year and mintmark is showing a mintage of 887,018,000. The 6th largest among all wheat cents.
Maybe the pop is low for that specific die and the fact that there are a lot more people that aren't into this hobby compared to those that are.
I believe that there are a more errors coins out there that haven't been discovered yet simply because the number of coin mintage versus number of people that are into coin collecting are too great. I just wonder how many super valuable coins are in the hands of people that have no idea about it.
