Some folks have been caught and have been sent to prison for smuggling errors out of the Mint. This was maybe six, seven years ago. I don't know of anyone being fingered for earlier episodes.

Wow, that's a great coin! Congrads on the find! I agree with the others that said that once you have this coin graded you should get it publicized to the various coin magazines. With the others talking about the government is going to take it...I highly doubt it. I'm pretty sure that this error was done with the help of a mint employee but I've never heard of those coins that were helped ever being taken away. Seems like some collects don't care that it's a "helped" error. Once again, Congrads!

Holy cow, that is one amazing coin. PHEW! Congratulations! How about we have a "pretend" auction on this?

I'll start the bidding: $20

That's all I can afford :)

...Price for one hour time in the parking meter?----25 cents
...Price for a local phone call in the 1980s at a telephone booth?----25 cents
...Price for a silver 1964 quarter?--- $3.00
...Price for a silver 1972 quarter struck on a 1964 quarter?--- PRICELESS!

Everyone has debated over if the coin was hand fed into the machines or just tossed in a hopper... either way, noone has asked... if the coin made it in the mint... why didnt the coin make it back out of the mint the same way?!

IF an employee smuggled a coin into the mint and put it in the machine... wouldnt it be his intention to get it back out of the mint for sale / keepsake purposes? (i know I would find a way to get it out)
Rest in Peace

If you were in charge of mint security, which would you be more concerned about, people bringing coins in, or people taking home free samples?

It is entirely possible that this coin made it out of the mint and into someone's personal collection. When the individual passed away his family did what many do and spent it at which point it was up for grabs.
Just one way it could have come into eel's hands

Maybe this coin was stuck in one of the coin bins or machines. Maybe it was wedged in a crack or something and it finally worked it's way loose after eight years. Maybe it was swept under a press and finally got swept back out and thrown back in a planchet bin. I figure if we are speculating anything is possible. Does anyone know if it could possibly have been stuck in the works for that long? Could it be just an honest mistake? That would be an interesting scenario.

Can you see the mint marks for both years? I guess it would be even more interesting if it had two different mint marks on it.

EDITED: I guess I should have looked at the pictures. I don't see a mint mark in either location. Maybe it was stuck in the mint for eight years.

Ngiles if it had been stuck for 8 years not moving I would think the coin would grade high as never been put in circulation... I hope he grades it maybe that will help us guesstimate what happened!

I guess what I was trying to say (aparently quite poorly) is that there are many ways that this could have gotten out of the mint. none of which are relevent to this scenerio. Eel has the coin in hand and it appears to be real. enough said.

I now have the coin in my possession and have emailed James Wiles at CONECA for official attribution and grading through ICG. I'll keep you all informed of the progress.

I'm wondering if it is a proof coin? I couldn't tell from the images for sure but some of it looked like a proof reverse die had struck it with the type "B" reverse showing in some areas.

Talk about drama! I'm always on the look out of coins that seem to be out-of-place. I have about 30 1982 Linclons that I suspect to be brass. I know I wont know untill I wheigh them, but I am not holding my breath!! My 3 year old daughter wanted me to put the faces on my post! And....still waiting.....
