Unfortunately, mail187man, you're paying the price for others who weren't as careful when they used the public parks. It only takes one person who digs holes all over a park to spoil it for the myriad responsible detectors out there. Back when I used to detect there was an unwritten "rule" that permission should be sought before searching/digging on any property.

Well I spoke with the director of parks and recreation for the town. She did say that the field I was at is a no go only because of property lines and whatnot. I was kind of confused as to why but it seems like a no-go. She did, however tell me which spots are OK in town. One of which is an old camp that goes pretty far back. I also asked if I could use her name if anyone questioned me being there, and she said yes.

Turns out the spots she said were OK are potentially better than this ball park that I had been going to. All in all I think the lady saying she didn't want me digging there turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Thank you all for your opinions and comments.
Rest in Peace

Well, then...no go for the ball park but it turns out nicely in the end. The camp ground should be fun.

If she was being rude by turning her back and walking away while you were trying to speak, then she does not deserve any consideration. As long as it is legal, then tell her to mind her own business.
