It states: "Two years after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States of America, the Confederate States of America will pay Ten Dollars to bearer/ Richmond February 17th 1864" This is gun money, issued by James II in Ireland during his war with William and Mary. (One of my all time favorite junkbox finds!) It is a promise to pay a silver half crown to the bearer once James II defeated William and Mary. Ancient sources do not mention them, but they do not show signs of being regular counterfeits. The leading theory is that they were a form of military scrip, used by soldiers in or near enemy territory; if the worst should happen and they fell into enemy hands, the enemy would not have thousands of pounds of Roman silver at their disposal to buy weapons, mercenaries, etc. Supposedly, the soldiers would be able to bring them home and exchange them for regular silver. In 1654, together with the start of the Russo-Polish war, Alexey Mikhailovich of Russia tried to introduce a new monetary system. Specifically, he had new silver coins made in denominations of 1 and 1/4 ruble, and copper coins denominated 1/2 ruble, 10 kopek (possibly - there are records, but no extant examples are known), 3 kopek, 2 kopek... and 1 kopek. The larger denominations proved unpopular, the silvers hard to make, and the coppers too easy to counterfeit, so everything larger than the 1 kopek was discontinued shortly after. All of those are rare today. The kopek, however, continued to be made in copper right up until the Copper Riot of 1662 - however, after 1663, issuance of the old silver kopeks continued. (I'm not sure if I have one of Alexey's post-1663 silver kopeks; they're hard to tell from pre-1654 examples.) For what it's worth, I was unable to find any evidence that those copper kopeks were actually wartime issues, as opposed to being the product of a reform that just so happened to coincide with a war. But I can't think of anything better for this topic anyway. And yet again - sorry for photo quality. (And for coin quality.)
