I don't doubt the facts of your posted numbers.......nor did I mean to "exhault".....apologies friend. But the population of the U.S. is 300 million (legal citizens)....what is Great Britain ?...Jamaica?....Ireland?....France?>...Finland...Poland?......and the "melting pot" theory is NO WHERE NEAR what "ours" is........we have a much more "dynamic culture clash" of races, religions, etc. etc. etc. etc. All modern countries do to an extent........but not in the TENS OF MILLIONS that the U.S. does. Even Canada, our northern neighbor doesn't even have what .....a THIRD our population..... The United States has MORE PEOPLE IN "PRISON" THAN THE "TOTAL" OF SOME COUNTRIES POPULATION.........!....(I just want to protect myself and my family from that! thank you very much!).......

quote: Or would you prefer it if all people had to harm each other with was a club made from a tree branch?
It depends on what kind of tree you are referring to !!.....Is this a Yew or an Oak club ?.......will we allow foreign woods into our country that have a "harder" wood that'd hurt more ?....

and NumisMatty....... FYI.......we have a population of about 120,000 in my town and we're on our 3rd murder already this year......there have been "home invasions" in my specific community......beatings..(I don't think they used oak clubs! Ha Ha)....rape's....arson's.....general theft of property here is "obscene"...(coins would fall under this category)...There are MANY areas of MY town that I CANNOT walk the sidewalks at night, just because of the color of my skin (white)...or the daytime very safely either...also, believe it or not there is one area of my town that the POLICE will not even patrol in.... BECAUSE THEY WILL BE SHOT AT AS THEY DRIVE BY !...Latino/African American gangs (and whites too) are all doing HORRIBLE things in all communities in this country. And for me here, the corn and wheat fields of Kansas are NOT an "island in the stream"...it's here too........just on and on and on and on and on and on .......and I live on the plains of middle America!.....country-side small town U.S.A....The "Heartland" of America !........ but it's a microcosm of the rest of the country........crime is REALLY REALLY bad !.....from the small stuff to the big stuff ! Last year or two, we had a deranged woman go to a pregnant womans house...murder her .......and cut her baby out ......and claim it was "her" baby.........don't know if a handgun would have saved her life, but maybe....... Don't have the answers.........but here's an old Redneck saying for you....... NEVER BRING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT !........or in this case....NEVER BRING AN OAK CLUB TO A GUNFIGHT !.......Ha Ha Make handguns illegal....in this country.......then the criminals will be the only ones left with "handguns" and then what is the "public" supposed to do ?......throw rocks ?...[:It would literally take a century to get rid of just half of the handguns in this country !.....and trust me...the criminals would be the last to have them and the last to "turn them in" !.. (which they would NEVER DO!)... Ammo and guns would continue to "flow" into the country through Mexico and Columbia, Central America, Canada for many generations "after" they were made illegal......and just the mere "hint" of that Govt. action would cause people to "stockpile" everything too !The thieves or criminals will not be beating me with a "club" because my Govt. decided to make all guns illegal.......they will be using handguns legal or illegal.......cause they're criminals and they don't care what the laws are........take mine from me.....and I'm defenseless !......(except for my nice "oak stick" that I can throw at them before I'm shot with an illegal handgun!)..

One more little note of interest to a potential "thousand example list". During the horrible Hurricane Katrina...... law enforcement went around collecting peoples firearms in some areas for reasons they stated were "crime prevention". Well.... the result of that was tragic, as roving bands of "thugs" were going to peoples homes and beating them.....raping women...stealing whatever they wanted.......etc. etc. etc. A grandpa not able to protect his home or his grandaughter from being raped because his "handgun" was taken for his "own safety"............... I don't care who you are........THAT AINT RIGHT MY FRIEND !

Mexico, Poland, and Russia have stricter gun control laws, yet they rank above the US in murder rate.

Guns..... it's like discussing politics and religion. Sure to stir some opinions. LOL I will say, I'm a licensed concealed carry owner with multi-state permits. Ted pretty much sums up my opinon... http://youtube.com/watch?v=T_QjEL0uUgoAs far as the safe. I don't buy into the expense of using dehumidification unless your coins are stored openly. I just put mine into zip locks with a dessicant pack, problem solved for cheap.

I too am residing in Florida I use a dehumidified safe
It is huge and would take four people to carry it I also have a smaller safe, where I keep some good looking coins In case I am in a situation as described above I would tell the perp that the key to the large safe is in my safe deposit ox and my more valuable coins is in the small safe hidden (%&%)(@) They can have what is in the small safe. Oh by the way both safes are alarmed and I am a trained marksman with handguns, rifles and shotguns- not all of which are also in safes- because what good would they do me locked up?
I prefer the gel pack in my safes to the electric dehumidifer that is there.

Sure, you can have my guns. Come and get them. Better yet, come and get my darling's guns. Killing, or injuring for that matter, any person is wrong, but so is sacrificing your own life. All I am doing is keeping my family as safe as I can.

One important thing to note about safes is that they should not be kept in the open for anyone to see. Even though the safe itself is a measure of security, it should still be concealed in some manner, placing it in a closet or behind a false wall and most certainly bolted to the floor from the bottom.

Letting people know about your coins is a tricky thing too.....even if you have all good trustworthy people around you in your circle.......word gets out.....and sometimes to the "wrong people" inadvertently........"that's" where situations can develop.......and if enough years go by and enough people know......well.......scary possibilities there. My girlfriends brothers are trustworthy....but would they innocently tell someone of a safe and what's in there ?......could happen......co-workers ?....family ?....so many possibilities !

If you live in Florida, do you have a/c? How much does it lower the humidity in your house? A safe with a dehumidifier may be redundant.

LOL. Would someone tell me how they really feel about weapons....
We run the a/c in our house all year round. Ambient humidity with the a/c is 67%. It works well with my guitars which are also sensitive to humidity. I toss in silica gel packs and have heavy duty packs for the safe and another storage area. The packs have indicators and every two to three weeks, I have to recharge them. So, I don't keep the good stuff here except in passing. I do like having sets around that I am in the process of completing, hence, the question.

Starting to get like the PCGS forum here with so many posts not pertaining to the subject. As to a safe for safety. When delivered, if large, the whole world sees that. May as well put out a sign saying I have valuable stuff here. Regardless of where you live there is some type of humidity. Naturally if you leave your doors and windows open, humidity will get in and every time you open your safe, that will pour in. I live in a high humidity area and basically don't leave windows open. As in most homes the highest humidity area is a basement. I have a dehumidifier there and it runs frequently. Gel packs are basically an old method used prior to the more modern thing called a dehumidifier. I gel packed the heck out of my basement and a Hygrometer never went below 50%. One dehumidifier and now always below 30%. Not sure if there is still around but a company called Hoffman used to make air conditioned cabinets. Would work just as well as a safe and maybe better since industrial graded equipment. Safes are OK but as already noted not much in the way of protection against theft. I remember one neighbor that went on vacation. While gone a moving van pulled up and started to unload his home. The so called movers told nosey neighbors that the owners liked where they were at so much they decided to stay there. The so called movers took a large safe that was bolted to the floor, a home security system, the home burglar alarm system, everything else. When the vacationers came home they naturally were a little suprized.
