I've never sold a coin. However, some time ago I gave away about 500 1943 Steel Cents to a kid that was really into coins. That was many years ago and I still wonder how he made out with his collection. No regrets though. Kids need help.

I had to sell my National Bank note collection containing about 100 common to rare notes about 15 years ago. I needed money to finish the house I was building. The notes brought "peak" money at the time. Over the subsequent years I have been buying back some of the notes and rebuilding the collection again. Fortunately for me Nationals have not held their values and are somewhat depressed press-wise from when I sold them years ago. The house is worth 3x what it cost me to build so financially this all worked out for me. I still miss the notes though!

Awesome post/question. I regret each and every coin I've ever sold. The only coins that I sold was junk 90% silver, but as soon as I sold it, the price spiked. In the past I sold lots of common junk silver to buy older stuff, but still I always regretted it. About 20 years back, I got in a bind with taxes, and had to sell to pay taxes, just another regret.

Collecting is tough when we buy what we like and think of it as having value.. because the value part also means a potential loss of something you love.

Back in the 1980's, I went to a STACK's auction and got a 1944 steel cent for $800. I had it about a year. A midwest dealer offered me $1200. I sold it for a $400 profit. A similar one sold for 6 figures last year.

It had to be my 1937D 3 legged Buffalo XF that I bought as a kid in the 1950`s from a coin shop ad, Superior Coins?, on a match book cover for $25 area. Sold it for $350 in 1980`s along with my complete Buffalo and Washington quarters 1932-64. |

Not an American coin, but about 6 yrs ago or so, owned a 2002 1/10oz gold panda. A new edition of mintage's came out. Found out this was a key date. I originally purchased for $100. Sold during the mania for $1500, but the price went all the way up to $3000 or so... Wasn't attached to it so I didn't mind selling it, just sold at the wrong time.

I sold an RM Kellogg Good for 5 Cent token, it must be like an R9, I've never seen an auction record for it before and only pictures of one other example. I bought it for 10 cents out of a junk box and listed it on ebay in an auction. It ended selling for like $300 something dollars, I bet if I had held onto it for a couple years I could have gotten a lot more. |

Back in 2007 I pretty much destroyed my back trying to stop a runaway towmotor and had to give up my business and the Dr bills consumed most of my St Gaudens and my toned slabbed morgans - probably never to be able to replace them.  |

I think my biggest regret was selling an old US bill, looked like an AU, that had an error where the back was printed upside down. Not so much that I loved the bill (don't even remember which it was) but I hated to give that dealer a bargain because of the way he was putting down the bill and, in a way, me too. Unfortunately, such things have to be done when we need funds. |
