You can define it as:
Allegory, from the Greek " figuratively ", is a literary figure or artistic theme, which aims to represent an idea using human forms, animals, and / or everyday objects .

The coats of arms always have some kind of allegory, it is part of their essence I think. Like the crossed keys in the coat of arms of the Vatican, or the hammer and sickle in the one of the USSR.

When I thought about this post I focused on human representations or mythological beings, in any way any allegory is welcome, although generally when it is of everyday objects it needs a more explicit explanation of what they represent.
