Quote: I just received this one today. Main reason why I purchased it is because it is from 1964! I'm a sucker for pretty much anything 1964 (my birth year). Very nice! And I love the new avatar!

US Mint List medal 209, William McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury from 1913-1918. Many know that the mint makes large and small size bronze medals for the Presidents, and replicas of the gold medal awarded as the Congressional Gold Medal. The mint also produces (produced) medals for all Secretaries of the Treasury and Directors of the mint. William McAdoo was also a lawyer, including stints with multiple railroads; organized the Manhattan Railway Co which completed 4 tunnels under rivers throughout New York City; was successful in heading 4 Liberty Loans as Secretary for the War effort during WWI; was the Director General of the Railway Administration; and was a Senator from California. The reverse of the medal shows America holding a cornucopia which represents the money raised during the Liberty Loan drives. in the background are the Statue of Liberty representing New York City of which he was a builder of; a locomotive representing his career with train companies and administration; and a Naval ship, soldiers, and sailors representing his importance to the war effort.

Looks like we both wanted to give the thread a shot in the arm there Griffin! Nice big bronze there. Thanks. 1971 Sovereign Nation of the Sioux Franklin Mint Silver Medal Struck by the Franklin Mint out of 1 Oz .999 Fine Silver in 1971, this round celebrates the Native American Sioux Tribe. The obverse features a Sioux Chief on horseback with teepees in the background, while the reverse was struck with the chosen symbol of the Rosebud Sioux. The edge of the round is reeded with an area stamped with the composition and mint mark. Toning is present around the rims with hues of amber and bright blue present. I believe the Indian chief on the obverse is "Spotted Tail" (warrior name, his birth name Jumping Buffalo). He was the uncle of "Crazy Horse". Spotted Tail, the great head chief of the Brule Lakota Sioux tribe, was an intelligent and farseeing man who realized alone of all the Sioux that the old way of life was doomed and that to war with the white soldiers was certain suicide. Although he was branded a traitor by many members of his tribe, the canny Brule, with all the skill of an accomplished diplomat, fought a delaying action over the council tables with the high officials in Washington. There were big time scandals in President Grant's time too over The Black Hills Gold discovery. Spotted Tail was assassinated in 1881 by his political enemy, Crow Dog. Bob Barker, former host of The Price is Right grew up on the Rosebud Reservation.

That Sioux medal almost makes me want to add a collection of Native American medals, but I can't collect everything, so I'll leave those for you. Also finished a set the week of US Mint National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial medals released in 2003. Obverse of all 5 show Teddy Roosevelt, reverses show Bald Eagle, Canvasback Duck; Salmon; and Elk. Per wiki: National Wildlife Refuge System is a designation for certain protected areas of the United States managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Wildlife Refuge System is the system of public lands and waters set aside to conserve America's fish, wildlife and plants. Since President Theodore Roosevelt designated Florida's Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge as the first wildlife refuge in 1903, the System has grown to over 562 national wildlife refuges and 38 wetland management districts encompassing more than 150,000,000 acres (607,028 km2). 88% of the acreage is found in Alaska, Hawaii, and Marine areas (open oceans and coral reefs surrounding numerous islands. Only the Bald Eagle medal was minted in Bronze, all 4 were minted in .900 silver at 26.85 grams.

That's a great set. I have one of each myself. Took me awhile to spot the second salmon jumping.
All my medals have been connecting in some way to something else I already have for my numismatic history book. I find it all very fascinating. I should have paid a lot better attention in school. I think Custer is riding my way.... I hear the bugler.

Teddy Roosevelt was an amazing person of whom I am a fan. Here is a silver medal about "The Great White Fleet of 1908" from the series "Franklin Mint History of the United States Medals" Bronze medals seem to be much more commonly made available. This one is sterling silver and weighs 1.25 troy oz. 600 grains and measures 45 mm. In the twilight of his administration, United States President Theodore Roosevelt dispatched 16 U.S. Navy battleships of the Atlantic Fleet on a worldwide voyage of circumnavigation from 16 December 1907 to 22 February 1909. The hulls were painted white, the Navy's peacetime color scheme, decorated with gilded scrollwork with a red, white, and blue banner on their bows. These ships would later come to be known as the Great White Fleet. Connecticut (flagship) Kansas Minnesota Vermont Georgia Nebraska New Jersey Rhode Island Louisiana Virginia Missouri Ohio Wisconsin Illinois Kearsarge Kentucky The Fleet Auxiliaries Culgoa (a storeship) Yankton (a tender) Glacier (a storeship) Relief (a hospital ship) Panther (a repair ship)

I think I got a pretty good deal on these additions to my Nürnberg-Fürther Strassenbahn transit token set yesterday. This lot of 20 includes 17 new additions for me, so I'll be over halfway to completion once I receive them.
