World War I souvenir. I'm always amazed that people let things like this leave the family. Notice that Marines is spelled wrong. I think whoever carved this just ran out of space.  |

Very cool WWI souvenir, dar! Those coins predated the war by about 40 years. I have the feeling that it's a 1 Franc - what's the diameter?

That's a great piece dar! I knew I guy that had a small collection of similar coins from era, some of those guys were pretty amazing with their engraving abilities.

It's actually a 5 Franc coin and the best thing is I got it for about melt.

Not as beautiful as some of the posts (above), but I reckon this falls under the category of exonumia. In 1968 and 1969, Shell gasoline ran a contest they called the Mr. President Coin Game. When you filled up you'd receive an aluminum 'coin' representing one of the US Presidents. And by collecting certain groupings on a game card provided, you could win various cash prizes up to $5,000 (in 1968 dollars). There's a detailed web page on them here: http://www.billjamie.com/Shell/Shel...in-Game.htmlEven though I previously didn't even know of the game's existence, I wasn't old enough to drive at the time, the price was so low my curiosity got the best of me.  Franklin Pierce is oversized because I initially overlooked him and then stuck him in. In 1969, Shell held another similar game. States of the Union, getting a three-decade jump on the US Statehood Quarters series. They also had a "Famous Facts and Faces" game with aluminum tokens. Some of these other two games were included in my purchase, although the description didn't mention them. I also received 17 duplicates.   All of these tokens are the same size (about 26mm), but Irfanview resizes them.  Facts and Faces tokens.  I'm sure none of these are worth much, but they didn't cost much either, and they're fairly interesting, with some info to read on the interwebs. |
