Price increase on 2018 "classic" circulation set ($26.95) even when 2017 set is widely available and being discounted to sell. What gives?  |

This is good example of lower interest of the people in RCM products. Just as a parallel: in 2011 I clearly remember missed 50c roll from the Mint. It was soldout in couple of weeks (2 or 3 max), and dealers immediately raised price (a bit though). The 2017 pair of rolls - 150 Anniversary - were even discounted by GW. The increase of the RCM price I can explain only with general fact, that everything becomes more expensive with the years. Edited by Silveroid

I haven't seen any advertising on "Special" circulation sets but given that these have been a fairly standard fixture of RCM offerings recently, it is a fair bet that there will be something later in the year... 2017 was crazy with a plethora of "Canada 150" offerings but we usually see Dollar set or a Twoonie set sold at cost (e.g. Sir John A) if not a full blown special set such as the 2003 W mintmark set. Given this is an Olympic Year, I expect at least a Lucky Loonie 5 pack at some point in time. |

When the poster mentioned "classic" circulation sets, I assume, he or she meant not one of the "Gift" sets, with thematic Loonie, but circulation 6-coin set, one of the regular January annually items.

What I may think - with the introduction of new "low entry" item as 1/4 oz silver with $3 denomination (priced CAD 20? ) - this will "almost" terminate base metal "oversized" 25 cents coins, that sold in the past for CAD 29.95 (like Bird series) Almost - cause looks like RCM still planning to use this format for the "coin in the card", like "Superman" or "Star Trek" etc |

Received my SD and Proof Set today - one of the fastest deliveries I've ever received from the RCM. It generally takes two or three weeks to get deliveries down here in the US - this one came in just one week. Both the coin and set look great! Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! Just got mail from a 'third party' regarding some surprise from RCM in 2018. So basically the mintage will be huge and actually this is bullion coin and we all familiar with the design but 2018-dated SMLs will be: Quote:"To herald the series' thirtieth anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint is introducing the first ever INCUSE Silver Maple Leaf" maybe this new to me only, but I was hurry to share. |

The incuse SMLs can be seen/ordered at Monument Metals. With both the Maple Leaf (reverse) and Queen's portrait (obverse) being incuse, it should be an interesting looking bullion coin. I'll definitely buy a couple. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.

The notification I received offered a payment plan where the cost could be split over 1, 2, 3 or 4 payments so the RCM appears to be recognizing that it is pricing itself out of the market. The RCM markup on silver NCLT is ridiculous . This set is 3.8x the cost of similar 2018 bullion silver. It is questionable whether the added cost of the proof dies, slower production throughput, clamshell case and field patterns justify this markup especially when there are 5000 units over which the setup cost can be spread. Without wanting to ignite the hobby vs. investment discussion, if you really like this set, wait for 2-4 years and purchase it at a significantly reduced premium. I just purchased a 2014 Oh Canada $25 set at auction, in its 5 coin case for $200 (after BP and shipping), significantly less than the $450 issue price and at under 2x bullion, much closer to a reasonable markup for proof, cased NCLT coins. An interesting question for any out there who understand the coining process in detail, how long do Proof dies last? I wonder if some of the mintage figures are tied to the anticipated life of a set of dies vs. an analysis of the market demand; i.e. make as many as possible with one or two sets of dies... I have no idea... |

The circulating coin dies in Winnipeg last around 200,000 or more when I asked in 2013, these NCLT dies in Ottawa, since only striking 5000 units at super slow speed one set should last forever.

I actually get notification for the special Anniversary designs of the 2018 Bullion SML coins. One with incuse Maple Leaf, the second with the "30" over Maple Leaf. No case, no certificate, no capsule. Mintage - seems to be 250K. So pricing will be bit over the spot. |
