Very nice coins MG!

I won't say which Haxby varieties they are. That takes some of the fun out of looking them up in Dr. Haxby's catalog.

Most people may not get too excited about these last two re-punches because they are not as boldly repunched as the better known varieties, but to those of us who are attempting to find all of the Haxby die pairs, they are a lot more interesting. One of them is pretty easy to find, and one is harder to find than any of the popular well known repunched 9's. Which is which? It takes a few years of searching to figure that out.

This is a great time to try and put together a collection of all the known die pairs. They can still be found without spending a fortune, unlike the early U.S. cents and Half Cents.

It takes some work and study, but it's a very rewarding collection to go for.

It's been a while, so here's another. Cost was $43 and I really hate it when it's not marked that it was cleaned. Oh well, I kept it anyway. PC59-46a3.

Nice tough die pair TerryT.

When I get a cent like that which has been cleaned, I will handle it often with my hands, especially touching (not rubbing) the cleaned areas until it tones back. That's the main way coins get their toning naturally, and so far it has always improved the appearance of the coin.

Here's a before and after photo on a cent I retoned that way. It was actually worse than the first photo when I got it. You can see a little toning beginning to come back on the first photo.

I love the J5a...it's a difficult coin...I've only managed to obtain 3 or 4 examples which makes it harder than any of the major repunched 9s...

Phil310 - good idea to handle it. I keep everything in 2x2's, but all the 2x2's for the brown cents and non-lustrous coins are only stapled on two sides, so air can get in (and can be easily taken out to take photos for here). Hopefully over time any cleaned ones will retone on their own.
