My second large bronze from the same period, and the heaviest. It has about the nicest Byzantine portrait that I have, but nowhere nearly as nice as your Sicilian Follis @Spence. That's it till the 590's. Heraclus. Follis. Nicomedia. 613-614 AD Obverse: Helmeted draped cuirassed bust facing with short beard, holding cross. Obverse Inscription: DN hERACLIVS PP AVG. Reverse: Large M, ANNO in left field, cross above, B (officina) below, III (regnal year 3rd) in right field. Exergue: NIKO. Bronze. Diameter: 32 mm. Weight: 13.8 gr. Sear #: 833. MIB 174.

More Byzantine gold today. Here is a Solidus, also minted in Constantinople and also with a little graffiti on the rev. It dates to between 603 and 607 AD and I have it attributed as Sear 618. Tomorrow we can drop back to the last decade of the 6th Century!

Quote: Outstanding facing busts on those last two They obviously took greater care of the high value coins, than they did of the bronzes. These are superb.

Thx guys! The portrait on this AE Follis is a little less clear. The good news; however, is that it was issued between 592 and 593 AD and therefore can move us back a decade. It was minted in Cyzicus and is attributed as Sear 518.
