Britannia is the national personification of Great Britain, and has appeared on coins since Roman times. She is typically portrayed as a helmeted woman carrying a shield and armed with a trident. One of my favourite representations of Britannia is on the reverse of the 2010 Britannia 1-ounce silver bullion coin:  Here is how she appears more typically, on a pre-decimal bronze penny:  Edited by NumisRob
