biokemist6- In addition, my friend said that he thought that the coin may have sat in acid, so the reverse became pitted, or that the reverse was damaged during a heavy cleaning.

I too think it's real. If you are still concerned about it, weigh it and measure it. If the dimensions/weight are close to the spec; I'd see no reason to believe it is fake. Lots of funky things can happen to a real coin in 140 years that might make it look or feel fake. I don't think that coin would be worth faking, and getting all of the nuances correct. If it was in fact a fake of that high quality, it may actually be worth more than the real thing; cuz I'm willing to bet its pretty rare. Food for thought.

You mean, johnny54321, that fakes are worth something too? I know I got a fake Confederate 50 cent piece. I think I read somewhere that they made some in 1962, or maybe it's a cheap Chinese knock-off. And I got this fake Continental Currency. The Conti is in bad shape, but the Confederate half is a beaut. Anyone care to see?

mfry- well, usually a counterfeit is only of value when it was a "contemporary counterfeit." Modern counterfeits are pretty much just junk. Sure, show us the counterfeit half.

In comparison to an "authentic" coin in better condition, I'm suspicious of the uniform wear over the entire obverse of the coin. Most coins that have been circulated just dont wear evenly/uniformly all across either face.

I'd say the coin is real but seriously corroded. It may have VF detail but with the corrosion I'd net grade it as no better than a good and wouldn't want to pay more then $5 to $7 for it if I was looking to buy one.
