How can everyone be sure it is a fake without any proof? From what I am seeing and what I can tell from other examples it looks genuine to me. It matches perfectly with other examples from PCGS and HERITAGE. Can someone provide proof of it being a fake rather than saying that date is off? I would love to learn real from fake, I am not 100% sure it is real but I am not 100% sure it is fake and would love to learn from this discussion.

I do believe the font of the numbers in the date appear thinner than a typical merc.

One_fine_dime, every image I have seen and compared, the font matches perfectly with this example. What proof do you have? For example, other post with fakes can show die lines/lumps/rust somewhere on the coin that are only visible on fakes to help identify it as being fake. Does anyone have pictures of fakes or some type of proof to confirm that this is a fake/real?

Mike1487, I can see what you are saying and you are making a good case. I always believe in a coin is innocent until proven guilty but I do not think it has been proven guilty of being a fake yet. Sure the date looks thin but couldn't that be from the lighting and/or angle of the coin? The hair detached, could that be from die polishing? I am not saying that I believe this is a real coin because it does look off, I just want to learn how to identify fakes.

Excellent post, Mike1487. It couldn't be clearer that the ebay item is a fake. I reported it yesterday, but it's still up for sale. I doubt that it will sell for $500. If ebay doesn't take it down, I expect the seller will relist it at a much lower starting bid; this, if he knows it's a fake. @ HeyMikep .... Take a look at the seller's items and what he's sold in the past. If this alleged "coin" is as great as he and you think it is, why isn't it slabbed? Always consider the source and question authenticity; this, for safety's sake. |

The lettering on the motto appears too thin, as well. Also, no dot between In and God:  I also think the FSB on the reverse looks completely faked and out of line with the wear on the obverse. Edited by ron6788

I don't know if a coin could be taken off ebay (or anywhere else) just for suspicion, either. I remember selling some raw Morgans last year that some people also thought were fake, not so much because of the look, in that case, but because I only asked $20 ea. |

What proof do you have? Heymikep, I don't know what I can do to make this any clearer for you. This coin is fake. The font of the date is wrong, there is not dot between IN and GOD, the letters are far too thin, and the hair being detached from the rest of the design that Mike1487 pointed out. You should always question the authenticity of a coin. Never assume any coin is real. |

I reported it because I have no doubt, whatsoever. I do not report coins that I simply suspect could be a fake. It's always better to see suspected fakes in hand. FYI, ebay just took down a European seller who was peddling forty or so fake Civil War tokens. I reported him, as did others. Apparently, if ebay gets reports from a variety of sources, they at least take a look. ebay can always consult with their own experts. |

I can think of a thousand reasons why someone doesn't slab a coin and I can also think of a thousand reasons to slab a coin. My comments on this post are to generate conversations and to learn by example of problems rather than just saying "it's a fake"! |
