The main focus of this coin is the spinning carousel, now that we can see it operating, it's a poorly designed operating system, I thought all you needed to make it spin was to place the magnet close to the carousel. Placing the magnet directly underneath the coin is so impractical way to display or show it's movement, surely some kind of self winding or as I first thought with a super magnet could create the movement, also the more you handle this kind of product the more chances of dropping it.
There was an external magnet mentioned before the pics and video came out so one would assume this magnet was a key component of making it spin, but not the design as is. As I mentioned earlier there are many ways to create the spinning action without earth shattering technology, just all the handling to show the spin defeats the whole uniqueness of this coin, people bought the Star Trek ship and the latest RCM report confirms we buy anything the mint produces
I actually bought this coin to display not because of the carousel that spins with a magnet. I like the looks of this coin in general. I never looked at this coin as a toy. Yes I'll spin it just to try, then put it away for display.
when I first read the info on this coin I wondered how it would spin. After some thought I came with this conclusion:
This what I wrote a few pages back:
Quote: I'm betting that the coin is probably 5 oz's and the carousel is 1 oz with a metal part at the bottom of the carousel for the magnet to make it go round. Imo.
Your design idea was right on, but if you promote this as a spinning carousel coin guess what almost everyone is going to do and eventually they will be dropped, people pay much more for crystals but they were never designed to be handle, but still this is different.
The packaging of the coin limited what could be done for turning the carousel. Besides a magnet what else could they use? A battery? A key wound mechanism? Given that the coin needs to be encapsulated rules out those two options. So they selected a dome to protect the coin the same way they did with the sculpture coins. The problem becomes the carousel is too far away from the top of the dome for a small magnet to turn it. They would need a huge magnet to get the carousel to turn.
However, I don't like the idea of handling the coin to turn the carousel. Not because I may drop it but because that dome is made of plastic and is easily scratched. Unless you wear gloves, that dome is bound to be scratched or scuffed if handled a lot.
