I'm sorry for your loss and that you are overwhelmed by the task ahead of you. I'm in the antique/junk business and have worked with estate sale companies for many years. I have talked with many people in your situation. Although almost no one listens to the voice of experience I'll go ahead and say this anyway.

#1) Don't throw anything away.
#2) Find a reputable estate sale company.
#3) Let them do all the work and take their 25-35%.

IF you take the time to find a reputable company you will get more after their fees than you will if you do everything yourself without spending days/weeks/months trying to figure out what's good or bad.

Sorry for your loss SimplyClueless. You have taken on a difficult task, but don't be disheartened or discouraged.

And thank you trdhrdr007 for the input.
I'm NOT in the estate sale or related industry, but understand the value of your comment. Let the honest professionals do their job and help you navigate through the confusing and exhausting process of sorting through what is worthwhile. And, yes you can find an honest professional by doing an online search for reviews on any company. It takes a lot of time to sort through the items efficiently and methodically.
Best of luck and come back to share some of your interesting items.
