According to Sear, it's an eagle.

I think the engraver had a sense of humor, knowing full well what pigeons do to statuary.
(critter sure looks more like a pigeon to me, though I suppose the perch signals otherwise).

Maximianus Herculius Follis

Obv:- IMP C M AVR VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev:- GENIO IMP-ERATORIS, Genius standing left holding patera and cornucopia
Minted in Antioch (_ | Theta / E //ANT Dot). Early to Later A.D. 309
Reference:- RIC VI Antioch 112c (R) (Citing Oxford; Apparently a rare issue for Maximianus Herculius and only issued from this officina)

6.39 gms. 26.19 mm. 0 degrees. Better than the RIC plate coin (reverse only illustrated).

From RIC Notes "A very remarkable innovation, peculiar to this issue, is the reappearance of Herculius (with the long legend Imp C M Aur Val Maximianus P F Aug matching those of Galerius and Licinus, and with cuirassed bust) on rare coins with Genio Imperatoris; this is parallelled at the same time (see RIC VI page 656). Expelled from Italy c. April 308, and rejected at the Carnuntum conference in November 308, Herculius had received ample share in the coinage of Constantine's mints, and it seems that Maximinus (now antagonisitc to both Galerius and Licinius) may have been momentarily willing to demontsrate his hostility by including the name of the man who might still play and anti-Galerian part in the west."

This forum needs a "post your recent acquisitions" type thread. I don't like spamming by having to start a new topic every time I pick up a new ancient :P

II refers to the officina mark (officina 2) in exe on the reverse. Lugdunum operated 4 officina at this time and for the first 8 issues they used I, II, III and IIII in exe as their officina marks. In their 9th issue they changed to A, B, C and D in left and right fields. One rare exception to this is a single die with B in exe. Here is my example of this coin below.

Probus

Obv:- IMP C PROBVS P F AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right
Rev:- TEMPOR FELICIT, Felicitas standing right, holding caduceus and cornucopiae
Minted in Lugdunum (B in exe) Emission 9, Officina 1. January to August A.D. 282
Reference:- Cohen 727. Bastien 439. RIC 129 var. Bust type F

3.34 gms

This is the ONLY coin from emission 9 to have the Officina mark in exe rather than in the left or right fields.

First, an unconventional piece of eye candy. Somebody was hungry, but I love the detail on her hairstyle and the beautiful patina.
