I often wonder about the origin of some of the symbols on coats of arms. In the case of Latvia, it's not too hard to grasp the rising sun, as Riga sits on the 57th parallel. It's also fun to see which which animals (and Mythical Creatures) are deemed to have the strength to hold up a coat of arms. Lions, griffins, elephants, leopards are all pretty believable. I can even imagine kangaroos are up to the job. But then we have Barbados with a fish and a pelican? C'mon, really?
