I got the bus to Canterbury on Saturday. I picked up a normal 2012 5p from the floor of the bus, and... one-third of a current polymer £5 note from the sidewalk in Canterbury!

Quote: nice finds, but how easy is it to tear a polymer note up? I've never tried, but I once got one in change that was virtually in two halves, and I mended it with clear sticky tape before spending it!

Nice scores, NumisRob! What happens to those polymer notes if you clean them with acetone?

Quote: What happens to those polymer notes if you clean them with acetone? The design will come off. Some pranksters have erased the monarch's head (or another part of the design) and then put the notes on ebay as 'rare errors'... Quote: Guessing 1/3 of a note has no value at the bank? I am going to take this one to the bank and try. A few years ago (when we still had paper notes) there was a TV report about a man who did some building work at a riding school and was paid in cash. He put the money in a bag with his sandwiches and hung it on a fence post. Next thing he knew, a horse was eating the food (and money!) He retrieved most of the banknotes but some were only fragments. He took them to the bank and they wrote down the serial numbers 'in case anyone brought in the other half'. He pointed out that the other halves were inside a horse and nobody would hand them in! I don't know if he got the full value of the damaged notes or not!

Is it not majority rules? That is, you need to have more than half the note and a serial number.
