Walking back from a shopping trip this afternoon I spotted something shiny in the long grass...

All I found today was 6 cents, kind of jealous with what you found.

When I was 7 years old (1957) I was with some cousins and my folks at Disneyland. Found $5 on the ground in Tomorrowland. Me being the good Cub Scout I was start waving it around yelling, "I found $5, who lost $5?" My mom grabbed me and told me it was my father's. I treated my cousins to items from the Disneyland gift store. I was surprised how fast $5 went. Fast forward to about 1982. Staying at the Kea Lani Hotel on Maui with my wife and two small daughters. I'm relaxing in the ocean behind the hotel when dollar bills start floating by. I must have grabbed about $6. Looked around and saw no one close by. I started waving the cash around yelling , "I found (alright, that part is a lie)" Lastly I was an elementary school teacher. One of my kids comes up to me before school and tells me that Jeff found $100 bill on the bus on the way to school. I call Jeff over. He confirms the story and shows me the cash. I think to myself, "yeah, right." Send him up to the office. Turns out he rifled his mom's purse and it's part of the rent money.

nice pick! curiously, the same happened to me a few nights ago, though it was only a quarter. I was riding my bike past the gas station near McD at 1:30am, something in the grass caught my eye..

Post-Your-Stories-&-Pix-Of-Found-Money

entrance to McD.. I really don't know how I see these things, I just do..

Post-Your-Stories-&-Pix-Of-Found-Money

quarter lying there in the grass..

i find change every night, the amounts vary, but most nights I can find $1+.. last night I found only eighty-two cents, but the night before that I found $2.19. I say 'only' because I make it a challenge unto myself to try to find a dollar in change every night. it's helpful to wrangle a stray buck now & then. I found another stray buck two nights ago, the night of $2.19. it was just lying there on the cement, I walked right up to it..

Post-Your-Stories-&-Pix-Of-Found-Money

it's a bit of a disappointment to find less than a dollar each night, but like jbuck says,

Finding anything is always nice.

@Howell1018:

that's very funny! thanks for sharing that!

@hfjacinto:

occasionally I have a night where i'll find just six cents, or twelve, or twenty-three.. it sours me a little (i guess I might be a bit spoiled by now when it comes to this; I've gotten used to finding more than $1 most nights, so I expect to find more than $1 every night), but I know i'll likely find more tomorrow. I really don't have a complaint about it (that I can share). I know I'm lucky to be finding anything at all. just keep watching out for it, the stupidity* is nationwide, so there'll always be something to find somewhere.

the stupidity* is pretty dense down here, so I'm able to capitalize on it.

*i call it stupidity because I don't know what else to call it. I refer to ppl just tossing their change away. to me it's just stupid. I don't understand it at all, but maybe I'm not meant to. I just capitalize on it & keep on bikin'. i'll always come 'round to the thought, 'they obviously think it doesn't matter'. I beg to differ. the coin & currency I find & save is helping me to round-out/finish up the silver eagle type l reverse series (helps feed some kitties, too! very important!). those ppl could just as easily do the same thing, save up their change & use it for something instead of chucking it away.

This happens in Britain, too.

In June 18, I was seated at my local bus stop awaiting the bus to Edinburgh. A teenage boy accidentally dropped a handful of change (about £1.80) on the ground and he completely ignored it.
I asked him "Aren't you going to pick that up?"
He looked at me in surprise or horror and replied "No, of course not, grandad", adding "it's not worth my while."

Since then, I've noticed lots of odd coins lying on pavements, grass verges, even house or shop floors.

Young people, especially, seem to think it's not worth bending down to pick up anything less than £5.

Mr Pink,

It's been slim pickings up near in the north east, must be a Florida thing with so much money :) I'm still surprised how much I find, I just deposited $7.50 into my account and ordered 2 new notes. Just yesterday I found about 17 cents, while not so much as you it still adds up.

I agree with you the amount of stupidity in the world (as pertinax) shows it's not just the US.

@Pertinax-

this is precisely what I'm talking about.

Quote:
"it's not worth my while."

it was worth his while to carry it around (presumably for something), but not worth his while to pick it up after dropping it. that makes absolutely no sense to me. I guess it's not supposed to make sense, because that is senseless. or centsless. had it been me, I might've been inclined to ask him to empty his pockets, throw down the rest of it.

i cash in on other ppl's stupidity. I encourage others to do the same.

I found 10p in the parking lot at my local supermarket yesterday, but it should really go in the 'exonumia' category!

The 'obverse' shows parking-lot damage. It's made of grey plastic!

plastic! oh my...

two nights ago I stuck my finger into the coin return tray of a soda machine (that I check every night), wiggled my finger up & to the right and felt the edge of a coin hung-up in the chute, and with a little effort I jimmied it loose; six quarters tumbled into the tray. the one stuck coin was holding back the rest.

i ended up finding a total $3.21 that night. joy.
