In 1971, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a Silver Dollar (SD) to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of British Columbia joining the Canadian Confederation.
The coin's obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II - the "Young Queen" Portrait. The reverse design presents a circa-1971 version of the Coat-of-Arms of British Columbia (it has since been updated).
The Arms include the British Columbia Shield which is supported, at left, by a wapiti stag (a male elk - elk are members of the deer family) - symbolic of the former colony of Vancouver Island (a habitat of the elk), and on the right is a bighorn sheep ram - representative of the former colony of British Columbia. (The two colonies became one in 1866.)
