Someone's signature here is "Education is the key to collector success." That is what it all boils down to. The more you know about whatever it is you do, the better you do it.
I have many "friends" who know absolutely nothing about coins, literally. If they found a coin dated 1800, they'd say "Cool!" and then spend it. I have, however, managed to get some of them just interested enough that they spot some of the obvious stuff, like wheaties, etc. I haven't convinced them to keep any of it though,...yet. I tell them about the coins I've found worth a lot more than what I paid for them (face), but most are still not the least bit interested.
