On the first page of this thread, qaman made the observation that some wooden nickels read "Untied" instead of "United", and this is another one of those.

I know, knew more printers and sign painters that where the worlds worst spellers! There was an old joke that asked what is a sign painters most important tool? A dictionary!

It almost makes one wonder. Was it intentional? At times I think we are untied now, surely as history repeats they have had those feelings in the past.

Doing a very unscientific random sampling from the ones I have it looks as though many "untied" are on an obverse with a buffalo. Maybe traceable to the same manufacturer? Of course there are exceptions.

Hadn't seen one of these before. Not sure how this odd denomination worked out in practice.

Nice posts. I agree with Circus - these are a nice diversion. I have a couple bags of them just tucked into a corner out of the way.

Here's a pair representing two of the most (in)famous towns of the Old West. Note that the Tombstone one has that "Untied" legend that's been remarked upon previously in this thread. The Deadwood one exhibits the anomaly of a saguaro cactus in the background (not exactly a flora associated with South Dakota).
