Yeah but Carl ,Albums have cardboard too .
At least it only touches the edge in an album. The problem with folders is that the backing touches one side of the coin. Most of the time that backing has residual adhesives that come in contact with the coin.

It is not the cardboard that causes the problems, it is the glue. If you look at the empty slot in most Folders, you would see a sort of shiny substance. This is the glue from the manufacturing of the Folder. Most companies simply slap glue on entire sheets of paper and lay the slotted piece on that. That empty slot now has glue on it and when you put your coins into that slot, the glue eventually messes up your coins. Many kids like that since a well worn coin could fall out of a slot so kids spit on the rear of the coin, knowing this will make the glue now usable to hold the coin. However, this is wear your biggest problem with Folders comes from.

I have never used the Whitman's for any length of time, I have bought many a folders and emptied them out. I use Library of Coins albums for all of my coins that are in albums.
