Die chips don't leave extra metal. The weight is the same before and after the strike. The metal is just distributed differently. The only time there would be extra metal is if the die broke and the fragment was retained on the coin. This would make it magnetic:

Thanks for the diagnosis @fortcollins and you too coop for keeping the info coming. Those dies were really beat up. I checked a few with the magnet no hits yet. Cool concept with the die breakage turning coins magnetic. Funny how some damage like a Cud is good and other damage like Mechanical Doubling is bad.

It would only be magnetic where a piece of the die would be pressed into the coin. Steel having a strong attraction, would be able to hold the coin up of the piece was large enough.
