Hondo, I think yours is a contemporary counterfeit. I've had some like it in the past.

Thank you, IGE. One day I'll have it XRF'ed along with several suspicious cobs acquired long ago.

I posted about this coin a few posts back: ...eBay item number: 276347510151 ... ...sold to some poor soul for $51.00 ... had it been genuine, on ebay, would have gone for $350 - $425, with around 25 or so bids ... ...I notified the seller at the outset of his auction, pointed out the exact same cob was offered 3 items down from his, that they were both well known fakes, so he re-worded his description to say he "didn't know if genuine or not'...

Quote: France 12 Deniers (1 Sol) 1791 cast counterfeit. 10.13 g, compared to 12.23 g for copper (KM# 601) and 13.37 g for bronze (KM# 600). Casting bubbles evident and granularity in fields, mushy devices, and improper color. Guessing made out of lead, or some other pot metal?

...I believe these were some type of pewter composition, made before the passage of the Hobby Protection Act (1973) ... I don't know for what purpose, possibly movie props, or some type of promotional, possibly kid's toy ... they are very common & appear on ebay (as genuine) regularly ... no two cobs are exactly alike, & if you see two that are, at least one is fake ... (usually both) ... these are obviously cast, not hand hammered between dies, as all cobs were ...

France 2 Francs 1920 - fake followed by genuine. Note that the fake is marked "Essai", which is used to denote trial pieces. My genuine one is not so marked, although Essai coins were minted in 1920. Ordinary issues are 8 g and 27 mm; fake = 9.22 g, 27.3 mm; my genuine = 7.87 g, 27.2 mm.

German east africa 2 Rupien 1894 -- 20.35 gr -- 34.22 mm -- In my opinion most likely a modern (bad) forgery to deceive collectors. In this condition it would fetch something between €150 and €200

US 50 Cents 1900. Something tipped me off that this coin might be counterfeit. 8.11 g; 30.12 mm - 30.42 mm diameter (30.6 mm nominal); 1.71 mm thick vs. 2.15 mm nominal.
