Well, I could spend all day on Google and Wikipedia trying to figure out what sort of dragon this is -- wyvern, amphiptere, etc., etc. -- but instead I invite you to do so yourself! I've got a very important baseball game to watch this evening.
Here's what I know for sure: this particular dragon sits atop the coat of arms of Derbyshire, where my extremely rare silver shilling token was issued, probably on spec, for the myriad inns on the stagecoach routes in and out of the county. Note their towns all itemized (with an "etc." to suggest even more) on the reverse.
As for the dragon itself, one blazonry website describes it thusly: "Out of a Mural Crown Or a Dragon wings elevated Sable...collared Argent." But wait! To the rescue springs the Derby County Council with a helpful modern layperson's explanation on its blog, as follows: "The dragon of the crest, with his plainly turned out metal collar...symbolises...the county's foundation by the Danes (men of the dragon ships)..."Derbyshire, City & County, Shilling (ND, but circulated 1811-12), Dalton 2, RRR Go Yankees!
