Firstly, the Central Bank of the GG in Krakow actually partly caught fire, with a lot of oddments being thrown out of windows to prevent spread. Secondly, the state print works in Warsaw were first looted by AK units during the uprising, and the rest was hauled off by retreating Germans. Thirdly, corruption and the underground economy in the final days of the Third Reich saw a lot of philatelic / numismatic material being stolen / sold out the back door in both Germany and the occupied territories from official institutions (including print works), with eager buyers looking to hedge uncertainty with things that were not cash (why so much strange stuff turned up in West Germany after the war) -very insightful info & much appreciated "norantyki" I was about to purchase a mismatched serial number & was glad I looked it up on SCWPM. It was P49 1992 10 Lek Valute (=500 Leke) from Albania. Fortunately, there was a note " Many examples of #49 have mismatched serial numbers. No additional premium is attached to them." (SCWPM 24 Ed P.33) |

@walk2dwater - ya, those are an odd series of notes - various other errors such as severe offsets of serial numbers also command no premium. My understanding is that the serials were added after printing, but before issuance on machines left behind after the Italian occupation nearly a half century previous! This is just what I have been told by a couple of dealer friends - I am no expert in Albania, but if it is the case, no wonder there were issues!

Here is quite a spectacular Irish error note, a One Pound note, 1974, with the date missing from the lower right, the serial number missing from the upper right, and partially missing from the lower left. The note should have a 6 digit number in addition to the prefix of three characters. A (1972) £1 note is also illustrated below to show the correct positions of the date and serial numbers on a Lavery £1 note.   |

Here is a cool error note I picked up on ebay some years back. It is an error on an Central Bank of Ireland £10 star (replacement) note. [Prefix T was used for the 1975 and 1976 star notes (D with a double number prefix was the standard issue note)]. This is the only Irish star error I have ever seen. Banknote is folded during numbering and dating . . .  . . .resulting in the date being printed on the reverse bottom left . . .  . . .and a blank date field on the face!  |

Thinking about it, an error on a star note is very approximately 0.5% of 0.5% of circulating notes (if my math is correct).

The £10 star error had being doing the rounds for a year or more before it was put up on ebay, I had seen it at a show, so had had an opportunity to examine it closely which always helps. |

Another Irish £10 note error, this time with mismatched serial numbers. A run of these appeared over 20 years ago. they turn up occasionally. All nice AU.  |
