Below is P-131 50 Baht, one of five Thailand Commemorative denominations which paid tribute to the late King Rama IX in 2017. The front is essentially the same as their earlier series which were current during his lifetime (eg: P-119) but the back shows him during his marriage & at a different stage of his life compared to the regular series. Each of the other denominations (20, 100, 500 & 1000) also portrayed him during different stages of his career.

never heard of 'commemorative notes' what constitutes a commem?

"Commemorative notes" are similar to commemorative coins: they're typically a special edition of a regular series with minor design adjustments (or a completely unique series) which mark an anniversary or special event. Some nations seem to have more "commemorative editions" than others. The US issued the 1976 $2.00 to mark 200 years of independence & then modified their regular $2.00 (kept the back of the commemorative $2.00) going forward.

Does that answer your question @Dearborn?

Here's a unique 2023 commemorative $2.00 from the East Caribbean States which is the first time this bank has issued a $2.00 (typically $5, $10, $50 & $100)

It commemorates 40 years of the banks existence & features Sir Isaac Viv Alexander Richards (aka "the master blaster") cricket legend. On the back are plenty of sea life creatures amongst a coral reef:

Here's the last commemorative I picked up for 2024. It's a 1999 Fifty Yuan from China, commemorating 50 years of communism there.

Not sure why I even bid on this one (I usually don't go for non-circulating notes) but it was part of a true auction style listing order I won. I think I liked the design of the back (with the doves).
