1929 was a better year, the year of the crash, but that was in October - the period before that was party time with the roaring twenties roaring to a crescendo. Here is my finest Halfcrown of the era   This is a full EF coin and again with a very weak strike of George. Notice the detail on the Thistle, Rose and the lions on the shield, wear is visible there on the higher VF coins (Like my 32). All my Halfcrowns from here will be less nice, although a few high VF examples will be shown. The 1928 coin is very worn I show tomorrow. Dorado mentions their coin as being 4th type, and they are right and therfore you will see over coming days types 1 to 3. A brief list now Type 1, 1911 - 1919, Early shield and early portrait in sterling silver. Shield design here dates from George William de Saulles, who designed it for Edward VII Half crowns in 1902, it was retained with a slight edge modification. Type 2, 1920 - 1926, As above but debased silver (.500) Type 3, 1926 - 1927, Like first 2 but modified portrait of the King (As you see above on this coin) Type 4, 1927 - 1936, Like the coins we have been showing - modified portrait and Kruger Grey shield obverse. The rest of my 1929 is hilarious A very average French 10 centimes of the style used between 1905ish and 1930   Despite it's common ness, I love the style - the gorgeous Art Nouveau style artwork and lettering and the hole as a design device for lettering and tendrils to wind around. For a low value coin - its very chic. |

Similar to the French coin, the Belgian 5c, 10c and 25c coins were Cupro nickel holed affairs.   Unlike the 1931 Belga, this coin is in French and the Kings cypher is used to creative effect. Again by 1929, this design was looking tired and had been around since 1904. This and the French coin grade Fine or thereabouts. |

Nice halfcrown, Princetane!  A trio of British coins from my collection: 1929 sixpence:  1929 florin:  1929 One Puffin from Lundy:  In 1929 the owner of the private island of Lundy in the Bristol Channel, Martin Coles-Harman, issued coins with his portrait to the value of half and one Puffin. (Lundy is a famous nesting-place for these sea birds). Smaller but equivalent in value to the British halfpenny and penny, the coins were given in change in the island's one pub and circulated briefly, but the UK Government wasn't too happy: they declared the coins illegal and fined Coles-Harman the princely sum of five pounds! Further coins to a similar design were struck in 1965 and 1977 but these ae generally considered purely NCLT issues! Edited by NumisRob

Thx - love the Lundy, I have a huge collection of their stamps - which were allowed due to a fee called Puffinage which covered the cost of carrying mail from Lundy to Ilfracombe or Bideford in Devon.
The stamps were from ½ to 12 puffins in 1929/30 and each stamp showed the number of puffins to the value, so the Half was the head and chest, 12 showed 12 puffins on a rock!
There were also further fantasy issues of Lundy coins in the 2000s as well as 1966 (A gold pair) and 1979 (50th anniversary).
A puffin was the equivalent of 1 penny and these coins are quite rare and expensive now.
