Really enjoying the continuing parade of German states. I don't remember seeing Osnabruck or Hildesheim yet on this edition (though I have a couple of the latter coming up over the next 230 years). And the coat of arms on that Hesse 1/8 thaler! For 1724 I have more big hair on this 1/2 ecu of Lorraine (KM calls it a 1/2 thaler, and locally it was known as a demi-Leopold).   Edited by tdziemia

Lovely Lorraine ½ ecu, @tdziemia! Here is a favorite coin of mine, I really like its design. France 1723, louis d'or "Mirliton", Louis XV, Orleans (R). In 1723, France was still recovering from the financial turmoil of the two first decades of the century, which culminated in the crash of John Law's paper money based system in 1720 (more about that in a few days). This 1723 louis d'or weighed 6.53 g and had a value of 27 livres. It replaced the 1720 louis d'or of 9.79 g, valued at 54 livres when introduced, but succesively devalued to 39 livres 12 sols in 1723, at which time it was demonetized and many melted down to provide material for the 1723 coins. The 1723 louis d'or was in turn replaced in 1726 by a 8.16 g coin, initially valued at 20 livres, but soon revalued to 24 livres - a value retained for the remainder of the century. Both the golden louis d'ors and the silver ecu d'argents underwent weight modifications to manipulate the currency, but the fineness of both was maintained at 917/1000. |

Love all the SSC coins, issued well after the South Sea Company bubble burst in 1721, Britain's first real investment bubble as share prices rose to nearly 100 Guineas and then dropped to a few pence making many impoverished overnight.
There are many satirical cartoons on it, but it was not the first big bubble in Europe, Tulip mania in 1636/37 saw single Dutch Tulip bulbs reach as much as 40,000 Florins (A coin worth around 3/-) in 1636. Prices collapsed afterwards and many who had invested in Tulips got burnt, it added to the 30 years war basically.
Sadly no George I for me, but Queen Anne is coming.

Indeed that is a beautiful design and coin @erafjel! For me, same chap, one year younger on this 1723 Lorraine teston. Because of that turbulence in the monetary systems, there were 10 different types of Lorraine testons issued between 1700 and 1723. Testons dated before 1710 are rare because most later dates were re-struck over them. As best I can tell, this one is on a new planchet. TOo bad someone gave it a cleaning in the past.
