Thanks, @keith. I got that coin from one of @spence's favorite dealers about 20 years ago (also the 1624 ort a few years later). Quote:

Not Polish, but I wanted to post this anyway...   Bohemia, Ferdinand II, uniface 1/4 kreuzer, 1622 (the date is just visible at 11h). KM 280, Numista 104706 (my coin is apparently still the only example there). |

This type belongs to the so-called "Kipper" series of debased coinage (caused by the economic troubles of the ongoing Thirty Years' War... only about five years in at the time). Krause describes it as silver, but all the examples I've seen (online, aside from my coin) are at best low-quality billon, and probably just plain copper. I suspect that quality control wasn't very good in those days either. |
