I have no idea what caused it, but I doubt it's an actual mint error. The doubled die you're talking about looks like MD to me as well.

It is either MD or retooling. The head thing is PMD of some sort,not an error. John1  |

I wish the coin was in better condition. This one is interesting. It almost looks as if the center of the obverse die had collapsed before this coin was struck allowing the copper to spread into the gaps, but proving it would be impossible. While I'm almost sure it's PMD a tiny part of me wants it to be an error. It looks like Lincoln had a run in with an Alien and has a "Face Hugger" in place. If you've seen the movie you know it's only going to get worse for poor old Abe. I wonder if it could be copper solder that was added to the coin and was returned to circulation. It has interesting symmetry around the "crater". Can you zoom in on the defect below the "E" of WE and above the hair line?

I use to be a Land Surveyor and we used a 'Spindle', basically a survey nail/spike, as survey point or benchmark in rock, asphalt, concrete road or bridge. The pattern looks like head of said spindle/spike/nail. They come in all sizes.  |

If this coin was struck with something would there be overlay. If it was heated, would it change color.

I figured it out!. Its from a Demogorgon (Stranger Things). Now we know he wasnt shot  Whatever it really is. Its very strange |

What strikes me the most is whatever it was that caused that massive damage on the obverse did not affect the reverse whatsoever. I am almost inclined to say some type of strike through.

Im with you. No damage on the reverse is whats confusing me too. Looks like extra metal but there no extra weight. I would hold onto it to get a definite answer from an expert. I would send it to someone just to be for sure. Maybe Mike Diamond will chime in sometime or send it to him

The damage is so neatly confined to only the head. That's a keeper no matter what imo.

I agree with yokozuna, the raised areas on the head are very interesting. They appear to have been struck that way since there's no evidence of the material being forced outward from the crater, or damage to the reverse, but not sure how you would go about proving it. 100% don't get rid of it until you can get it to an expert who can examine it in person. I think a lot of people in here are being much too quick to dismiss this because there's no obvious error category that it fits into, which usually means it's just PMD. I'm not so sure in this case, and I think the more intellectually honest answer is for more people to say they don't know unless they can actually identify something that precludes the possibility that it is an error. Well, one thing for sure, you have one of a kind. And we all know there are a few one of a kind coins out there that made it out of the mints that shouldn't have.
To me, iIt really doesn't look like material was added after the mint either.
I'm with SamCoin and Yokozuna, and I definitely wouldn't get rid of it.
