Quote: They said that they keep needing to drop change off at the bank because they get so much of it from customers. Peoples coin collections might be finding their way into circulation these days.

I've been picking up some rolls the last couple weeks, not many. Have seen a minor uptick in older coins from customer wrapped rolls--not gem quality, but more wheats and earlier nickels (40s and 50s).

I have noticed that mix of coins received in circulation the last few weeks has been different. Nothing new and more coins from the 70's and 80's. I assume this is coming from coin jars and not the bank.

"Simply put, there is an adequate amount of coins in the economy, but the slowed pace of circulation has meant that sufficient quantities of coins are sometimes not readily available where needed, you may be experiencing this in your local communities." - US Mint officials @ Worth congrats on your first post

I started a thread today kind of about this topic, but with a different twist to it. My thread was locked in reference to this thread, so I thought I'd continue here. I'm noticing articles about a coming increase in demand for nickel, and I'm curious if the fed are hoarding coins with a possible increase in demand for nickel with the coming electric vehicle boom. Even if they've increased their coin production, it doesn't seem to be making it to the public due to "supply disruptions". There seems to be a strong motivation to become a cashless society, and I personally believe it has to do with a coming boom in metal prices. Both of these are pretty interesting. Not saying that nickel will reach the heights of gold/silver, but I still believe it's possible that in 10 or 20 years we could see nickel prices bring random coins to a higher melt value than face value. https://www.forbes.com/sites/timtre...3fc1b25128abhttps://insideevs.com/news/440582/e...is-new-gold/

MY wife works for a convenience store. She goes to the bank a couple times a week and she always asks for rolled coin. They still go through a lot of it at the store, especially pennies and quarters. Recently the bank has not had rolled coin to give out occasionally. So she has to ask every time she goes.
I also remember 2009 when people were dumping out their coin jars at home. She would bring home silver dimes and quarters a couple times a week. This could happen again now that banks are opening up again. There are a lot of people still not working.

My wife was teller/vault manager at local CU between 1998-2013 and she found silver occasionally. I found over 1,000 silver coins between 2009-2014 and I wasn't even considered a roll hunting fanatic! I don't think we will go entirely cashless for political reasons, and this is where I must stop myself regarding that.

That is interesting, you may be on to something here even tho the Fed Reserve is not a department of our govt, are they in business to hoard metals? The Fed does not manufacture coins.

I dont think the FED is in the business of speculating on precious metals by hoarding US coins, especially if that action causes significant disruptions to the supply chain of US coinage. Even if it was, I'm willing to bet that it would be cheaper and easier to do that by hoarding bar stock rather than minted coins, both in acquisition and in dispersement. Without the downsides of creating a supply shock to the minted coins
