Part of the reason why it appeared that the RCMP was idle, is that it was part of an ongoing investigation. I suspect they wanted to find the source, rather than those who were distributing these into the currency system.
Still, this is good news overall. But I doubt anything will be done to cull the majority of the existing counterfeits that are out there today. Other than collectors, nobody bothers to look at their coins close enough to care, and nobody wants to be stuck with something worthless that they paid $2 to acquire.

and only 1 person was charged, not much of an investigation.

Yeh . he alone imported, stored, rolled and distributed everything.
Even if just 10,000, it's quite an operation for a lonely quasi-senior guy.
One has to be impressed by such an enterprising man.

I too find it odd that only one person was charged and believe the number of fakes in circulation was severely underestimated not to mention that this has been going on far longer than reported. It was established that these coins are not coming in from the front door as most banks require you to have an account with them to make or withdrawal money. https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/news/...y-charges?re The only solution in my opinion is to recall all pre security $2 coins as the mint should be doing to recover the valuable nickel content. No way that a mere 10k of counterfeit coins would result in boxes with numerous rolls of camel toes or dozens. More like 100k or more likely 1 million + to make the effort worthwhile and profitable.

The 10000 number is just what was seized by the RCMP. That is a drop in the bucket compared to all of the counterfeit Camel Toe toonies in circulation. Conservative estimates put the real number at upwards of 100x that many.

I read the new release and it just blew my mind. They arrest one 68 year old guy and let him go on a promise to appear. Bet he absolutely at the bottom of the supply chain. Still no clue as to exactly where is it manufactured, how it is being imported and who is distributing it.

So I was the original poster of this post.
What did I tell you guys at the beginning? -The people using rolls of these coins were Chinese. -The coins seemed to be exploding and the epicentre seemed to be in York Region. *Markham is a 10-minute drive neighbor of Richmond Hill where the accused is located.

Too little too late, but a step in the right direction. Ask for 2 loonies instead and avoid the problem. .

There is a very easy fix or two. 1. Change the design like the British did with the £1 then demonetize the current ones . 2. Since we have polymer notes , reintroduce the 2 Dollar note and put Terry Fox on it !

Agree with #1 from Pacificoin. The one-pound coin was the most counterfeited coin in the world for a while. There is a display at the Bank of England with a few thousand fakes. They got smarter and made it much tougher to convincingly copy.

. er . you know it doesn't matter what we think right?
If this and other discussion boards proved something is that the Mint doesn't care what we think. The Mint doesn't even care about the coins it produces !!!
and the RCMP? 3 years investigating and finally indicting only one front man of an operation lead by people somewhere else in the world? Probably a multi-million dollars activity involving tens of people in Canada alone.
The official response for this whole thing, from the beginning to end, was and is PATHETIC.
