If its the same counterfeiting outfit making all these fakes then why would they take a normal looking 6 and 9 from the 1996 fake and change them to a more obvious fake design with no hook on the numbers in the later years?

The 6 and 9 on the 1996 are the right way it's the foot on the 96 that gives it way.

A member of this site who has MANY more examples than I have has confirmed to me that the SAME reverse die is being used for all 5 dates. The obverse dies have been adjusted to match. The 96 and 02 obv. maple leaf is in the right place but poor, the 4,5 and 6 it is not correctly located and the obv dies are cracking. Images of differing locations is required for better understanding. MM

Do what the UK did with the Pound coin .
Withdraw all the current $2.00 coins and replace with a brand
New design .
When the old pound coin was withdrawn around 10 %
were found to be counterfeit .
It is easy to pass counterfeit $2.00 coins
in Canada because it buys virtually NOTHING by itself .
I have to admit that I scarcely even look at my change
and I am a coin dealer .

The 2005 I found in Vancouver was from the Montreal 2004-2005 issue, not this series of counterfeits. I have not seen or heard of any of this issue making out out to the West Coast yet, but I have been warning all the merchants and banks that I deal with here about them.
