hmm. my first thought was:

i combine all the cash— $850- to make the best gold coin purchase I can, within the limit of the $850. if any cash left, I buy silver of some kind.

if I have to keep the purchases separate:

$100- junk silver;
$250- I might be able to find a really decent 1909-S wheatie;
$500- upgrade some of the business strike ASEs in my dansco, not giving a hoot about premiums if the cash is given to me, just get the upgrades.

recommendations:

I'm not very good at recommending anything, but if I had to i'd say:

spend it sparingly, get a nice variety of things that draw your attention immediately, get various grades, study them, shop slowly, no rush, pause to do some reading.. pursue a wide variety, get as many different things as you can, don't limit yourself to strictly coins, allow yourself some slack for supplies, books, etc., and most importantly—- go after what makes you happiest. if you get something that you ultimately don't like, find someone to trade with. whatever you end up doing, have fun doing it.

I am going to have a second bite of the cherry and keep the American theme going (I am not averse to American coins afterall)

$100 - A nice VF to EF classic head cent from about 1810
$250 - A MS Colombian Half
$500 - A Seated Liberty dollar in VF or seated Half in XF/AU.

For some reason, gold has never got me - I don't know why, but with the overheated Gold market, the best coin I could buy with $500 would probably be a quarter eagle - compared to the chunky silver on offer, its lacking.

If given any money at all I'd use it to pay my property taxes.

I'll play along too, though my understanding of the prices of these things might not be up-to-date.

$100 - Maybe 2 or 3 MS-65 Franklin halves (non-FBLs), or one MS-65 with FBL.
$250 - A couple of gem MS-65 Peace dollars that I am missing from (1922, 1923, 1924, 1925).
$500 - 2 or 3 of the semi-key date Canadian silver dollars that I need in MS-62 (1938, 1946, 1950 ARN).

Of course, if you ask me in 30 minutes, the list might look different.
