The center of the planchet is the thickest. The metal moves towards the rim when struck. Thus the edge/rim area can be different thicknesses but the center of the coin is reduced. I've seen years in the late 1990'S that showed a thicker rim, but were normal weight.

I have seen a number of these "long bevel" planchets, on both cents and nickels. Weights are within normal range, so it's unlikely these represent foreign planchets. It's possible we're looking at domestic planchets sent through an upset mill whose grooves were designed for a foreign planchet.

Thanks Mike! That helps a lot even if not 100% sure how these things came about. Always appreciate your comments on these things.

Are there clash marks on the Obverse?

Wow. That's a good spot from the pic. I put it back under the photo light and still really can just barely sort of make out the one bit of clash closest to the face. The rest is not visible under a loop however I try. Seems there is a clash but just really hard to pick up other than that exact lighting I used for the photo.
